paint myself in blue, red, black, and gray.
by Chris ~ July 27th, 2001. Filed under: people i know.Good song. Well, this would be another field report from glorious Woodburn, Oregon. Some things have happened since my last update… as well as some things have happened before my last report that I forgot to mention, the most notable being: a new friend of mine has gone and moved away. I met Geoff through my summer job with the university. He was a cool guy, definitely the golden boy of Conference Services, but he used that to his co-worker’s advantage. Any ways, Geoff has gotten up and moved off to Washington to fill his requirement with the Air force… Its good for him since he’ll get to fly his big ol’ jet planes; but it is not so good for us left behind… he was a funny guy, a real cohesive member of our staff. Well, he’ll be missed… but when the Federal Government owns your ass, you’re at their whim. Best of luck to ya, buddy.
In other news, last wednesday some where out of the blue I was offered a job. Kind of cool. The offer came from one of the conferences that I had been working with as a Conference Assistant: Teen Tours of America. I was having breakfast with the leader of the group on the morning of their departure, and we were just talking it up he asked about what I was studying, I told him “Philosophy and then eventually grad school for Secondary Education”… I didn’t think anything of the question, I get asked it all the time. A little bit before they got on the bus, I went to shake hands with the group leader and he said “Chris, I’ve been impressed with what you’ve done for us, and since you are interested in education and we employ almost all teachers, you should come work for us next summer. Apply on line (http://www.teentoursofamerica.com/) and then call me and let me know that was you from the University of Oregon, and I’ll hook you up.” He then spoke of their many North American tours (Alaska/Hawaii/the South/New England) that they lead and the told me that they were having a European tour next year. This offer suddenly because very exciting. I told him that I would love to and definitely would take him up on his offer.
But of course, this being my life there is a wee bit of a shady side to this… I went to the webpage, looked at the application; it wasn’t the “WE DO FULL BACKGROUND CHECKS” that disturbed me, my background only has minor felonies (joking), rather it was the big flashing animation of “YOU MUST BE 23″… I sat there as it flashed mockingly at me. D’oh. Oh well, I will at least call and see if there is any way around the age restriction ($?), but I am guessing it is there for insurance and liability reasons… well, maybe in three years. Speaking of my age, the even known as “Birthday” starts up for me in a couple of days… thus meaning that my life has a run 25% of its course. The big two-O. I’m not really in great anticipation of it, I still can’t go out to bars or pubs with my friends, I still can get lottery tickets, I still can be drafted… but oh well, no reason to hurry it up, right? I’ve never been much a birthday person as it is… I see it as a celebration of “Good for you, another year of not dying.” Don’t worry, that is just my satirical look at it, I know people have stuff planned for me, even against my protests (August 7th), but I am happy that people care enough to at least acknowledge that… even though I may look embarrassed about it, I’m actually celebrating it inside… not my birthday, more the fact of people remeber/care. Any ways, in future updates you can expect these topics: Birthday. Eric Clapton, New room, Getting to wear my RA badge again, and any other random events. Until then…
Do you know how long it takes me just to choose a title for updates? Sheesh… too many good songs to pick from and inside of those; too many good lines.
